Elgin Park Dexter Stud is owned and run by Leigh Clark and John O'Brien. Our property is located in Victoria, one hour west of Melbourne near the township of Ballan. The nearest regional city is Ballarat, thirty kilometres further west.
Our farm consists of fifty five acres of grazing land, split into one large and ten small paddocks and we currently lease a further sixty acres.
Our interest in Dexters was aroused after viewing an episode of Burke's Backyard which featured Dexter cattle. This was back in 1990. By the end of that same year we had arranged to purchase a pure bred heifer from the United States and by January 1991 we had picked her up from the quarantine station in Newport, Melbourne.
This little heifer was called Windswept Acre Mae and she was the base for many of the best cows we have today, producing twenty registered progeny during her life.
In 1992 we became interested in showing cattle, with our first venture to the Ballarat Show. This was followed up in 1993 with an entry in the Victorian Dexter Breed Show and then the Royal Melbourne Show in the same year.
The early years saw limited success on the showing circuit but we learned a lot about cattle stucture and conformation as well as preparation and presentation. In time we achieved considerable success in the show ring and are still producing top quality show winners today.
We currently run a herd of fifty to sixty Dexters. This number can fluctuate quite a lot during the year as new calves are born and other animals are sold.
Although most of our herd is black in colour we also have a good number of red animals and a few which are dun in colour. Our next batch of calves is due from about October onward.
